Selling ads can be a consistent way of making money without having to do very much but keep up your blog.  You will have a steady flow of income that won’t change very much from time to time.

Selling ads, on the other hand, requires you to have a decent amount of traffic on your site.  You must also have a consistent target audience that relates well to the advertising space you have sold.  You will only get money if the target audience matches the advertisers and they click on the site.

You can make money from affiliate programs.  These allow you to make money even if you have a smaller than average audience.  One big problem is that there are some affiliate programs that don’t help you make any money, no matter how long you blog.
