One of the most controversial, yet exciting, ways to blog these days are to blog about news stories at the same time as they are happening. It is possible to update a blog or write a new one at any time of day or night so that new blogs about exciting news updates can be written and other blogs can be updated with the click of a button. Blog news is among the most current news out there and it doesn’t have to be censored like regular news stories. There are some great advantages to do and a few disadvantages as well.

One particular case of blogging before news happened in London in July of 2005. There was a terrorist attack with a bomb hitting a subway car, causing an explosion and some people took cell phone pictures of the event and blogged about it within one hour of the event. Accounts by people who had been there showed up on blogs all over the world. People could read the blogs anywhere in the world, including the photos.

These stories were spread everywhere without the filter of actual fact checking so that the information could have been skewed or inaccurate and solely based on the individual’s perspective. It was a personal type of journalism that focused on the “I was there” information and not on the background information you would have gotten by reading the actual news. The news, on the other hand, is more exciting because it takes the power of the news and puts it in the hands of the regular person who happened to be there.

Most bloggers and those who comment on today’s culture feel that this trend toward instant blogging is a good thing for the news. It makes the information flow a bit more democratic and out of the hands of censors. It decentralizes the way news is delivered and puts it in the hands of a wide variety of people. Blogging allows more people to be in on the news and to say their opinion on what happened. One the downside, there is no actual fact-checking going on so the news has a greater chance of being inaccurate. This makes some people really opposed to the use of blogs to deliver the news.

There is essentially no journalistic accountability in blogs so that no one is responsible for errors in this instantaneous news. There have been many cases of journalistic errors causing rumors all over the web. Whether or not this style of journalism is ethical has yet to be determined. Nevertheless, it has the chance to change the way articles about current topics are disseminated in the populace. It may be the next big wave in how things get to people who want the most updated news stories.
